Since the Russian invasion began the Ukrainian resistance has successfully used technology to fight a digital war. This has greatly strengthened their resilience, with support from across the globe flooding into the country. Here we look at some key aspects of this modern warfare.
Aid for Ukraine
By using cryptocurrencies, the government was able to quickly raise considerable amounts of money to support the war effort. Through the state-owned Crypto Fund of Ukraine the country has been able to raise millions of dollars in digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
This fund has received around €50 million thus far. Although according to news reports a total amount of €90 million in crypto currencies has been donated to various resistance organizations.
€30 million of this fund has been used by the government to buy essential supplies for the front-line soldiers. This included vital equipment such as helmets, bullet proof vests and night vision goggles.
Ukraine is using the growing digital currency trend to their full advantage. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has recently announced that crypto exchange companies are legally allowed to operate in Ukraine. This should help create a legal market for crypto currencies in the country.
IT Army Of Hackers
As part of this digital war the Ukrainian Digital Ministry has set up a group of hackers as an ‘IT army’. These cyber troops are all volunteers and include members from outside of Ukraine. They use the messaging app Telegram to communicate and identify targets.
Most of these targets are Russian websites, ranging from media to official government sites. Once a target is identified the anonymous internet users can launch cyberattacks to disrupt and disable the sites.
Official reports suggest this cyber army is made up of more than 300,000 members. None of the members receive any kind of payment for their work. Due to the nature of cyber security their details are not even know to the Ukrainian government.
This army of ghosts has been highly successful in attacking Russian websites and is playing a vital role in the digital war.
Airbnb Assistance

Airbnb is also working closely with countries in Europe to set up free temporary housing for 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. There are also 21,000 Airbnb hosts that have opened their accommodation to provide housing for refugees.
